Happy Halloween from Ariel and Batman! Halloween was interesting this year. The morning started off great. I am one of the head room parents for kindergarten this year so Sadie and I were due up at school to work the party by two. We had planned to entertain our usual crew that evening with a big pot of chili and treats. All was going as planned until lunch time. The kids love to help cook and I think it is a great thing to let them do this. It's not only bonding, but they learn to help, and there are some math skills in there too! Well, I've changed my tune on that a LITTLE bit.
I wanted to have everything in the crock pot before leaving for school so that the evening would go as smoothly as possible and we could just enjoy it. When I make chili, the kids favorite part is to wash the beans and vegetables. I usually use the food processor to cut up the cheese to save on time so I had that ready to go too. While I was browning the meat, Sadie was at the sink working on the beans. We were talking away, backs to each other, when I heard the food processor turn on and a blood curdling scream. I turned around to see blood all over her hand. It-Was-Awful! Not knowing what had happened, but most likely able to guess what had, I turned on mommy mode and was trying not to curse myself for being an idiot, leaving the food processor fully connected on the counter with a child close.
I managed to wrap her hand up, apply pressure, and loaded her in the car to get to the ER. Sweet baby girl screamed until she fell asleep. Thanks to family close by, Mom and Steven stepped into help with the room party that we were missing (I felt like a doubly bad parent missing Joshua's first kindergarten party!). Art ran home to take over the chili while Belle and I ran to Children's Mercy. Long story, long, she managed to just take the top layer of skin off her finger which can be a pretty nasty scene of blood with a surface cut. I was amazed that it was not worse since there was so much, but thankful that was the case. She didn't need stitches...thank goodness! Just taped it up really well for a week or so.
That night started a bit better. The kids were so excited for trick or treaters and there were some adorable ones coming to the door!

Before dinner though, the phone rang and Grandma Clare told us that they were in an accident and their car had to be towed so they weren't going to make it there on time. What was with our luck today?! Fortunately, Paca and Grandma Clare were safe although their car obviously was not. Praise God everyone was safe. Halloween could have had a much different tune so we chose to focus on the positive that two BIG disasters turned out to be okay.
